Sex & Kinks with RubberDoll – Interview
BBAA: Tell us about your performances, how people react to them, and why you decided to concentrate so much of your efforts on performing?
RUBBERDOLL: The reason I find doing performances so satisfying is the immediate reaction you get from the audience. With photos and videos, it is a much longer process where you don’t really get any response until weeks later. But with live performance, the feedback is instant and it provides an adreneline rush that can fuel the performance itself. I enjoy making that type of connection with an audience and it’s probably the main reason I devote so much time and energy to performing live.

BBAA: It seems we’ve been seeing you everywhere around the world this year at fetish events. How do you cope with all the traveling?
RUBBERDOLL: One of the other benefits of doing a lot of live performing is that I get to travel to all sorts of places. I would never be able to visit half the places I’ve been if it weren’t for my role as a performer. Of course, it can be grueling to constantly be on the go, but it’s also very exciting to see new places and meet new people. I am currently in Europe several times a year, as well as numerous dates across the US and Canada, and I’m always looking forward to the next trip. You only live once, and it’s a big world out there, so why not see as much of it as you can?
BBAA: You’ve made quite a name for yourself in the fetish scene in the past three years! In your opinion, why you think you are attracting so much attention?
RUBBERDOLL: That’s a tough one to answer. I think the reason might be that I really devote all of my energy to pursuing an involvement in the fetish scene. Sometimes, it’s kind of hard to really see the progress, but when I look up and find myself doing things that I could only dream of a few years ago, I can see how far I’ve come. And that is really rewarding, since there is a lot of hard work behind it. In the rush to constantly get ahead and finish the next project, sometimes we don’t appreciate the moment we are in. But, I’m happy to be where I am and I’m grateful for all the experiences I’ve had so far.
BBAA: Fetish vs Mainstream. A lot of people seem to say fetish is becoming more and more mainstream and judging from the entertainment industry, it seems they are right: videoclips from Beyonce, Rhianna, Britney, and more artists all feature a lot of latex and films use the material very often in science-fictions and the likes. Yet, it has been argued on many web fetish forums that the more fetish is becoming mainstream, the more it is loosing its appeal for true fetishists. What’s your take on this debate?
RUBBERDOLL: I’m all in favor of seeing fetish related things in the mainstream. I don’t see how it diminishes or takes away from enjoying it. In fact, I think it adds to the scene to have more people involved who can bring in fresh ideas. There is always going to be a segment of people who want to guard their fetish as their own personal thing, keeping it underground and out of sight. But, I’d rather celebrate it and share it with the world, since I think it’s a really great way to express yourself. That being said, I don’t believe it will ever be fully mainstream. You will see aspects of it here and there, but the true hardcore fetishists will always be a select group. I don’t think we are in danger of seeing latex catsuits on sale at Wal-Mart anytime soon.

BBAA: There are a lot of videos on your website, how do you like video vs photography?
RUBBERDOLL: When I shoot scenes, I typically create both photos and videos during the same shoot. That way, I end up with both a photographic and a video representation of the scene. Creating them requires a very different approach, however. With photos, you are trying to capture a single moment in time, and express a feeling with that. So, a lot more goes into creating a specific pose and holding it. Video, on the other hand, is about motion and sound so each moment is not as precisely staged, but rather an overall feeling is what you are going for. It’s really hard to say which I enjoy more, but I would tend to say I view the photographs more than the videos.
BBAA: Let’s talk about your involvement with the film “Bianca Beauchamp All Access 2”. You are billed as being one of the four main cast of the film. How did you come to be in that film?
RUBBERDOLL: Well, I had been familiar with Bianca and Martin’s work for many years and had always admired the quality of what they produced. It always seems to be a notch above most other fetish work. However, I had never really gotten to know them until a few years ago when we were all at the Fetish Factory 11th Anniversary weekend. We had a lot of fun together and ended up spending more time together in Montreal and London not long after that. So, when it came time to film “All Access 2″ and they invited me to be involved, I was thrilled.
BBAA: How was your experience of shooting All Access 2 compared to other fetish film projects you have worked on?
RUBBERDOLL: All Access 2 was different than any of the previous video projects I’ve worked on. Most fetish films involve doing scenes that present a certain fantasy or scenario that appeals to people with a particular fetish. All Access 2 was something totally different; a reality-based look behind the scenes at a major fetish event. This is one of the main reasons I was so excited to be part of it. I had seen the first All Access and thought it really captured what its like to be involved in a multi-day fetish event. All the dressing up, partying and just the general craziness that goes along with those events was captured so well. Having spent so much time at events like this, I think it’s great to be part of a film that will document the experience to serve as a reminder of good times and as a way to share them with other people. So, I’m really excited to see how it turns out.
